I have been mixing alginate just by eye for some time. I felt stupid when a friend of mine have asked me what water/alginate ratio to use and how much, and I couldn't answer him!
Does anyone have measurements of how much alginate to use when doing a face or full head?
Also I know some companies sell alginate bonder, a solution you can spray/brush on to get a second batch to bond to an earlier pour. I know that it is something simple like baking soda... sodium_____ i have forgotten. Any clue?
Thanks
carl

Re: Stupid alginate questions...
Wed, April 13, 2005 - 4:32 PMits typicly 1 cup alginate to 2 or 2 1/2 cups water.
iv seen faces done with 4 cups of alginate, and whole heads done with 9
i usualy do larger heads (down past sholders) so i mix much more.
sodium bicarbonate is the bonder, it can be purchased at tri-ess sciences in burbank. i usualy just take a little in a cup and add water ...not to thick and not to watery. then u can scrub it in and re-apply alginate.
good luck

Re: Stupid alginate questions...
Tue, April 19, 2005 - 12:15 AMthe stuff I use now (with little threads in it to hold moisture) has me measure by weight. and with good reason, because it's very different "feeling" than the old stuff I used to use. -

Tue, April 19, 2005 - 12:18 AMIn a pinch you can superglue two masses together, though you'll tell where it seams in the piece you pull.
the bicarbonate is obviously a better approach.

Re: Stupid alginate questions...
Sun, July 24, 2005 - 9:20 PMUnless I'm mistaken Tri-ess is no more. I was there some time ago and it looked empty. I asked what was up and the usually gruff but nice old guy seemed very annoyed with my questions about his inventory saying only that they were cleaning up or something vague. Recently a friend told me it was closed. Anybody know something to the contrary I hope?
Oh.. baking soda IS sodium bicarbonate. Not one of the many things that one needs to buy at Tri-ess. -

Re: Stupid alginate questions...
Tue, July 26, 2005 - 9:23 AMWell, from my experience it's the best option when you need a new layer but it still doesn't work all that well. It's so much better to get a nice thick coat the first time if possible. Having two people applying alginate at once is a big help for large areas. -

Re: Stupid alginate questions...
Thu, August 18, 2005 - 12:02 PMYou are correct, sir. Tri-Ess is no more.
Most stuff like this can probably be found
at Burman Industries or places like Frends
Beauty Supply.
